In May of 1910, Halley’s comet was due to swoop past the earth. This caused all kinds of hysteria and doomsday prophecies. An Astronomer added fuel to the flame by saying Halley’s tail contained a poisonous gas that would infiltrate the atmosphere and could possibly kill all life on the planet. 2 men in Texas seized the opportunity and began selling “Anti-comet Pills”. The pills were just sugar pills, and the men were arrested, however their clients started rioting till they were released. Talk about costumer loyalty.
